Ep.1 - A família do Uca (A1/A2)

Hello everyone and welcome to the first episode of the Beginner European Portuguese Podcast powered by Uca Teaches Portuguese, I’m your hostess Raquel Reis!

I’m so excited to present this podcast, which is a project I’ve wanted to start for some time now. This podcast is going to be your place for all things related to language learning, but specifically Portuguese. So if you’re studying languages this is the place for you. But if you’re studying Portuguese, this is the perfect place to be. We’re going to have a lot of Portuguese free content over here. It’s going to range from texts, tips related to studying Portuguese and about Portugal, in general just keeping your goals in mind is the best way to achieve them. If you’re interested, stay tuned.

Today we are starting a series that’s going to be about A1/A2 texts. The title is pretty self-explanatory. These are texts that I wrote myself about the crab of the website. So for the A1 and A2 levels I’m going to be talking about him and his life. These texts are going to have vocabulary of the A1 and A2 syllabus as well as the grammar. When we get to more intermediate texts, in the future, it’s not going to be about him. Then it will be about deeper and more technical topics. But for now, we’re going to get to know Uca a little bit more. Okay?

Each text is going to be read in two different speeds. The first one is slow and the second one a little bit faster. Let’s get started!

Os caranguejos vivem perto do mar. O Uca também vive perto do mar. Mais especificamente, numa pequena ria. Esta pequena ria fica no sul de Portugal, no Algarve. Muitas pessoas visitam esta rio no verão, em junho, julho e agosto.

Ele vive numa toca, uma grande toca. O Uca vive lá com a sua família. A sua família é composta por 4 pessoas: a mãe, o pai, a irmã e o Uca, claro!

O Uca tem 17 anos e é de Portugal, ele é português. Ele não tem cabelo, apenas uma carapaça laranja muito dura! O Uca tem olhos pretos e é pequeno. Muitooo pequeno! Ele tem a altura e tamanho normal dos caranguejos. O Uca tem duas pinças muito grandes e fortes para conseguir defender-se. Ele gosta muito das suas pinças. Ele tem um website com a sua amiga Raquel para ensinar português.

O Uca vive com a sua irmã mais nova, Cuca. A Cuca tem 9 anos e já sabe ler e escrever. Ela também é portuguesa. Ela é mais pequena do que o Uca e o seu corpo é laranja mais escuro. Ela ainda vai crescer! A Cuca tem cabelo preto curto e encaracolado e usa óculos. Ela gosta muito de usar um laço rosa na cabeça. A atividade favorita da Cuca é jogar com o seu irmão, Uca. A Cuca não trabalha, mas vai à escola todos os dias.

A mãe do Uca chama-se Bela. Ela é de Lisboa, mas agora vive no Algarve. Ela tem 40 anos e trabalha como médica no maior hospital da zona. Ela é pequena e laranja. Tem cabelo castanho escuro liso e olhos castanhos. Ela gosta muito da sua família e do seu trabalho. No seu tempo livre, a Bela está sempre a ler livros sobre a história do mundo.

O pai chama-se Casco e é do Algarve. A profissão dele é engenheiro. Ele tem 50 anos e é muito alto. Tem uma carapaça laranja-escura e cabelo preto curto. Usa óculos e veste sempre um fato todos os dias. Ele trabalha muito e não tem tempo para descansar. Nos fins de semana faz passeios com a família e cozinha muita comida.

Esta é a família do Uca. O Uca também tem avós, tios e primos, mas eles não vivem perto. Eles vivem em Lisboa. No Natal, na Páscoa e no verão a família está toda no Algarve. É sempre muito divertido e é a altura favorita do Uca e da Cuca.

Now, I’ve prepared four questions for you guys. I’m going to ask them first in Portuguese and then in English, just to make sure that you got it correctly. Feel free to write these questions down or just think about them in your head. After I read the questions in both languages I’m going to tell you the answers to all of them.

1) Quantas pessoas tem a família do Uca? / How many family members does Uca have?

2) Quais são as profissões dos pais do Uca? / What are Uca’s parents jobs?

3) Descreve a irmã do Uca. / Describe Uca’s sister.

4) O que é que o pai do Uca gosta de fazer? / What does Uca’s dad like to do?

Answers:

1) A família do Uca tem 4 pessoas. (Uca’s family has 4 people)

2) A mãe do Uca é médica e o pai é engenheiro. (Uca’s mom is a doctor and his father is an engineer)

3) A Cuca/A irmã do Uca é pequena, tem o corpo laranja mais escuro, tem cabelo preto curto encaracolado e usa óculos. (Cuca/Uca's sister is small, has a darker orange body, has short curly black hair and wears glasses)

4) O pai do Uca gosta de fazer passeios e cozinhar muita comida. (Uca's father likes to go on walks and cook a lot of food)

Ok! Feels easy, doesn’t it? I hope it was fun and somewhat challenging, even though I want you guys to find it a bit easy. I leave you guys with this one text for now.
